Under the title of "A Cultural Coalition for a Citizens' Europe", we proudly present the autumn programme of "A Soul for Europe", which is dedicated to strengthening citizen participation in building Europe from the bottom up. Together these events represent "A Soul for Europe's" kick-off to the "European Year of Citizens" 2013.

"Cities for Europe" Conference – 9 November 2012
On the eve of the Berlin Conference 2012, the city of Berlin and the "A Soul for Europe" initiative, in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education, are co-organizing a conference that will bring together representatives of European cities, mayors, artists, cultural workers and engaged citizens to discuss the concrete measure cities can take to help build a "Europe of Citizens". Berlin Conference 2012 – 10November 2012
The fifth Berlin Conference 2012 aims to take a stand by working to strengthen both the level of participation and the partnerships between European civil society, European institutions and European citizens. These partnerships should work together to foster positive European development, which can be achieved by motivating all parties to become actively involved in a "Cultural Coalition for a Citizens' Europe".

Forum Cluj 2012 – 13-14 November 2012
"European Cultural Capitals 2020+ Mapping the Journey" brings together cultural producers, city planners, citizens and experts from past, present and future European Capitals of Culture to see what urban and social processes the title should invoke 10 years from now. The conference themes are: The European Identity Crisis and Culture, European Capitals of Culture and Urban Development and Culture and Community Building. The topics are addressed both in conference panels and workshops, allowing for an exchange of information as well as the opportunity to define concrete steps, ideas, and projects that cities aspiring to become European Capitals of Culture after 2020 need to embrace. The conference will take place in Cluj, Romania on 13-14 November 2012, and is organised by the AltArt Foundation, the Cluj-Napoca European Capital of Culture Association and A Soul for Europe.

Brussels Conversations 2012
on A Cultural Coalition for a Citizens' Europe – 16-17 November 2012
The 2-day conference at the European House for Culture will further discuss the future of the European project and the citizen's role in making it a reality. Developing citizenship in Europe is one of the essential needs that should be addressed during the European Year of Citizens 2013, and the Cultural Coalition for a Citizens' Europe believes that culture is the key to increasing this spirit of citizenship.

The Cultural Dimension of Citizenship – 30 November 2012
This is the third in a series of three events dedicated to citizenship and building Europe from the bottom up. The Amsterdam Conversation 2012 presents an international conference with workshops, lectures and public discussions where speakers from Berlin, Brussels and many other European cities will examine the cultural dimension of citizenship with Dutch experts and citizens.

Active Citizenship – How to make it work?
6 September 2012, Amsterdam (Netherlands)
Participants in this workshop discussed the topic of how to involve citizens in the political decision-making process. The aim was to involve young people and encourage them to actively take part in their societies on both the cultural and political level. In the context of this workshop, Farid Tabarki, member of the "A Soul for Europe" Strategy Group, presented the work of the initiative and pointed out ways to create "active citizens" in Europe. Steve Austen, member of the Strategy Group and permanent fellow at Genootschap Felix Meritis/Felix Meritis Foundation , also actively participated in the workshop.
Change the Climate: Alternative Scenarios in Art, Ecology and Economy
29-31 August 2012, Riga (Latvia)
This interdisciplinary symposium presented different approaches and projects that work towards creating sustainable life on our planet, some of which also use the forces of art and culture. Hannah Splitt from the Berlin office of "A Soul for Europe" participated in the symposium. The cultural component of climate change will also be one the topics discussed at "A Soul for Europe's" Berlin Conference 2012.
Venice Northeast 2019 meets Bulgaria
7 June 2012, Venice (Italy)
Representatives of the candidate for the European Capital of Culture 2019, "Venice and the Northeast", and of six Bulgarian candidate cities (Burgas, Kyustendil, Plovdiv, Ruse, Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo) met at this one-day workshop. The meeting of the respective programme directors and political representatives aimed to create a network of exchange for the preparation process. "A Soul for Europe" Strategy Group member Ruggero Lala contributed as the workshop's closing speaker.
The Strategy Group was set up and its work is made possible with ongoing financial support from the Robert Bosch Stiftung.
