(1) Intro

Dear friends and colleagues,

Over the last month, a couple of projects and topics were intensively continued within "A Soul for Europe's" activities. The following two topics in particular will play a great role in all our activities and in the EU agenda after the summer break:

  •  European Capitals of Culture – "A Soul for Europe's" position towards this remarkable programme by the EU Commission is the inclusion of civil society as imperative in the development process of a European Capital of Culture in order to ensure its cultural, regional and social sustainability.
  • The European Culture and Economy Platform (ECEP) functions as a think tank to develop common strategies, actions, policy proposals and specific recommendations to ensure the sustainable development of Europe.

Even right in the middle of the summer break, "A Soul for Europe" is busy continuing its projects and preparing the next events, which mainly focus on the two new topics that have become especially interesting for "A Soul for Europe" over the last year: the inclusion of civil society in the development process of European Capitals of Culture and the creation of a European Culture and Economy Platform (ECEP) to foster dialogue between the realms of culture and business.

In both fields, the Strategy Group and its partners have been particularly active over the last few months, participating in hearings in Brussels, organising conferences and workshops, and involving stakeholders in the next steps.

We look forward to working together with actors from various fields across Europe!

(2) Upcoming "A Soul for Europe" Events/Activities

"A Soul for Europe" is organising several debates within the framework of the European Culture Congress, which will be taking place in Wroclaw from 8 to 11 September 2011. The European Culture Congress is organised by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Audiovisual Institute, co-organised by City Wroclaw, co-funded by the European Union. The event is a part of the Cultural Programme of the Polish EU Presidency.

In three panels, we will be discussing

  • the relationship between culture and business in the development of Europe,
  • the involvement of civil society in the EU flagship project "European Capital of Culture" and
  • the EU MEDIA Programme as an example of the impact of European cultural programmes

with politicians, representatives from business and civil society, filmmakers and managers of European Capitals of Culture.

This is the main event that "A Soul for Europe" is organising in 2011 with a high level of participation and attention. Amongst others, EU Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, Doris Pack (Chair of the Culture and Education Committee in the European Parliament) and film director István Szabó have already confirmed their participation.

PLEASE NOTE that the date for this conference is 10 September and not 9 September as originally announced.

If you wish to participate in the Forum or other events during the European Culture Congress, please contact Cosima Diehl at diehl@asoulforeurope.eu.

(5) Recent Events

  • Conference and Workshop: European Capitals of Culture in Sofia – 26-27 May 2011
A conference and a workshop on the topic of the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) was held from 26 to 27 May in Sofia in cooperation with "A Soul for Europe". The internal workshop on 26 May was attended by about 20 participants who worked on three essential aims: to develop a deeper and more exact concept and understanding of the label "European Capital of Culture", to discuss and develop the initial ideas and visions about the Sofia candidature and to strengthen the position of the civic sector. The conference on 27 May aimed at continuing the process of consultation about the future of European Capitals of Culture. It was also intended to give voice to the aspirations and ideas of the cities in the regions that would like to apply for ECoC status after 2019, develop international contacts and networks on the topic of the ECoC and confirm the role of Sofia as an active regional player. Partners: Genootschap Felix Meritis/Felix Meritis Foundation, Foundation for Urban Projects and Research, Robert Bosch Stiftung, Sofia Municipality, Sofia Development Association, Stiftung Zukunft Berlin.

  • Conference: "Culture.Cluj2020" in Cluj – 2 June 2011
The conference dealt with the perspectives of the city of Cluj, Romania, on becoming a European Capital of Culture in or after 2020. At the same time, it continued the work of "A Soul for Europe" regarding the ECoC process, namely the inclusion of civil society as imperative in the process of developing an ECoC in order to ensure its cultural, regional and social sustainability.
Moreover, the conference aimed at strengthening international contacts and networks on the topic of the ECoC. Organised by the Cluj2020 initiative in partnership with "A Soul for Europe".

  • Discussion: Europe Needs Active Citizens in Berlin – 24 June 2011
Within the context of the second Berlin Foundations Week, Volker Hassemer discussed the need for active citizenship for a more successful development of the European Union with Andreas Apelt (authorised Representative Chairman of Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V.), Norbert Glante (MEP) and Joachim Zeller (MEP). They agreed that cities and regions ought to position themselves as European players, not merely as advocates for the European cause.
